Download NOW! Wait, hold on a minute. Your computer is begging you to listen.

Some “things” to consider prior to downloading new stuff on your computer:

We are all guilty of downloading programs or software just because. Then we forget about it and never even use it. It sits on our computer’s hard drive, taking up precious RAM and if we do this enough (download aimlessly) it ends up slowing our processing speed down.

Download with discretion. No need to obsess about it, but use one general rule of thumb before hitting that oh so tempting “Download Now” button.

“Will this program benefit my computer?”

If it is something you cannot see yourself using on a regular basis, SKIP IT. If not, here are some other things to consider beforehand.

1. Is the program from a trusted publisher? How can I be sure the file is safe to download?

– Do your research! Check others blogs or websites, ask around… forums are great for this. Just type the name of the program in google with the word “reviews” or “worth downloading” and you will find plenty of good resources.

2. If possible, download directly from the product company’s webpage. For example, it is best to download the browser, Chrome, from Google.com. If this isn’t an option try a trusted downloading site. I have been using download.com for many years and have very little bad to say. BUT, you still need to be cautious. They like to place ads where you click on the ad and not the program you want, so get in the habit of checking the filename before you click “Run” or “Save as”.

3. I get a lot of questions about whether to save file or run it when your computer prompts you decide prior to downloading something. It really is a matter of personal preference and if you have the space to save a bunch of install files. I see no reason to save these types of files for all your programs… I tend to save a couple because I’ve ran into issues where I had wished I had. Your favorite web browser and chat client. Shit happens. But there’s no need to keep every single install file “just in case”. Just click “Run”. This means that the installer will “run” when the download is done. Simple as that.

4. Now it comes down to a matter of your computer needs versus your wants and desires. We all want to have it all, but do we need it? No. Hardly. And that’s where this becomes quite subjective, everyone has different needs.
